Tamara De Lempicka
Tamara de Lempicka’s cosmopolitan portraits are imbued with the opulence and liberated boldness of the années folles: the golden age that overtook Europe in the 1920s and 30s.
Rendered in sleek lines, vibrant metallic hues and geometric forms, her artworks came to epitomize the aesthetic of the Machine Age. Lempicka navigated a turbulent and peripatetic life that, despite its obstacles, afforded her remarkable freedom; she embraced her many lovers, her art, and her international pursuits with equal fervor. This exhibition offers a window into Lempicka’s world, seamlessly intertwining her arresting portraits with the design, jewelry, photography, and machinery of the period on which she left an indelible mark, and in turn, strongly influenced her oeuvre.
This exhibition – coinciding with the Broadway debut of Lempicka: The Musical and in anticipation of the first major US retrospective of her work to open at the de Young Museum in San Francisco this October – represents a significant moment in acknowledging one of the most influential female artists of the early 20th century.
Tamara de Lempicka, an iconic figure of the Art Deco movement, was a Polish painter whose illustrious career spanned across France and the United States. Celebrated for her sleek, stylish portraits of the aristocracy and the affluent, alongside her distinctive, highly stylized nudes, de Lempicka’s work is a testament to her unparalleled skill and unique artistic vision.
Born in Warsaw and briefly relocating to Saint Petersburg, de Lempicka’s life took a pivotal turn when she moved to Paris. There, under the tutelage of Maurice Denis and André Lhote, she honed her craft, blending the sharp, geometric lines of refined cubism with the smooth, classical beauty reminiscent of Jean-Dominique Ingres’ work. This fusion of styles quickly became her signature, earning her a prominent place in Paris’s vibrant interwar artistic and social circles.
Her personal life was as colorful and intriguing as her art. After marrying Tadeusz Łempicki, a notable Polish lawyer, she later became entwined with Baron Raoul Kuffner, a distinguished art collector. Their relationship, beginning in 1928, led to her being dubbed “The Baroness with a Brush” by the media after her marriage to Kuffner in 1934, following her divorce from Łempicki.
With the advent of World War II, de Lempicka and her husband relocated to the United States, where she continued to evolve her artistic repertoire, including celebrity portraits and still lifes. Though her work fell out of favor post-war, the late 1960s heralded a resurgence of interest in Art Deco, catapulting her back into the spotlight.
In 1974, de Lempicka made her final move to Mexico, where she lived until her passing in 1980. True to her spirited and passionate nature, she requested her ashes be scattered over the Popocatépetl volcano, a fittingly grand gesture for a woman whose life and work were marked by boldness and intensity.

Bello Gabriel, born in 1988, is a celebrated Nigerian figurative artist known for his innovative blend of realism and impressionism. His artistic journey took root at the prestigious Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, Nigeria, where he honed his craft and developed a unique style that captures the essence of his subjects with both precision and poetic fluidity.
